UAE Citizenship through Naturalization

With the new laws and regulations announced this Saturday (31st of Jan 2021), soon, the expatriates can officially become the country’s new citizens. This new citizenship law will allow the successful applicants to:

  • Have the rights of a UAE passport holder,
  • Live in the UAE forever,
  • Run their business with the rights a UAE national holds.

One of the major advantages of the newly announced citizenship criteria is that expats can finally enjoy holding dual citizenship, which was previously impossible. Dual citizenship will allow expats in the UAE to retain their previous citizenship. However, in case of attaining new citizenship, they should inform the relevant Emirati authorities.

Previously, the process of naturalization could take a long time and is not easy in the Gulf (generally speaking). With dual citizenship, expats can now travel worldwide with rights equal to those of the UAE nationals. This is very precious for expats as the UAE passport is one of the most powerful passports globally and provides its holders with visa-free access to almost all countries around the world.

Who is eligible to apply for UAE citizenship?

According to the new law announced on Saturday, the following categories are eligible to apply for UAE citizenship:

  • investors,
  • people with specialized professions and unique qualifications,
  • doctors,
  • scientists,
  • researchers,
  • those who inspire and teach the youth at the highest levels,
  • artists,
  • writers,
  • creative talents,
  • those with unique and creative skills.

Besides these categories, those who have proven to enrich and transform their adopted homeland can also apply for UAE citizenship. Plus, the families of those who are qualified based on the naturalization rules announced by the UAE authorities can benefit from dual citizenship from now on. It has been decided that citizenship can be granted to skilled professionals nominated by rulers’ courts, the Cabinet, the executive council of each of the seven emirates, the courts, or the crown princes.

This major change in citizenship criteria is followed by the idea of retaining the intelligent and skilled workforce after successfully adopting many business strategies (zero incorporation and personal tax and total repatriation of the capital and profits to attract foreign investors). In fact, progressive and specialized professionals who have proved to be valuable assets to the UAE’s business environment their skills and experiences will definitely continue to enrich UAE society through their hard work, skill sets, and dedication. Expatriates have so far contributed so much to the thriving economic system of the UAE, and it is foreseen to boost even further and now even faster through the naturalization program, which offers exceptional and unique opportunities for foreigners living in the UAE. The formalization of citizenship has yet to be announced, and more details are expected to be disclosed soon.
